I am Associate Professor in Teaching & Learning European Studies and Associate Dean for Education at Maastricht University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. I like to describe myself as an academic who works at the intersection of research, teaching and learning, and leadership. In my work, I value cooperation and teamwork with students and colleagues from the academic and support staff to generate new research and innovate in teaching and learning. I am a member of the faculty's Department of Political Science and teach BA and MA courses in the field of European Studies. My research interests include the European public sphere, media and Euroscepticism, and EU democracy, but also issues related to teaching and learning in European Studies. MA European Studies alumna Christiane Barth and I were awarded the 2018 Journal of Contemporary European Studies Best Article Prize for our article 'The Maastricht Treaty and public debates about European integration: The emergence of a European public sphere?' (volume 26, issue 2). Afke Groen and I won the 2019/2020 CERiM Communicating Europe Award for Research-Teaching Integration for our work on the FASoS Teaching & Learning Blog. |
I participate in Maastricht University's research section 'Politics and Culture in Europe' and am also a member of the Netherlands Institute of Government (NIG), the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) and the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES). I was co-opted member of the UACES Committee from 1 September 2018 - 31 August 2021 and am ex-officio member of the committee since 1 September 2021 due to my role as moderator of the Ideas on Europe blog. Committee work included stints in its Engagement Working Group, Events Working Group and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group.
Since September 2022 I am a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Political Science Education, political science's leading journal on teaching and learning. I have also been a member of the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Contemporary European Studies since May 2020. Prior to this, I was co-editor of the books review section of the Journal of Common Market Studies from 2010 to 2015, together with Paul Stephenson. I have reviewed articles for several journals, including Educational Research, Higher Education, the Journal of Common Market Studies and the Journal of European Integration.
In my free time I enjoy long-distance running, cycling, diving, and seeing and reading about the world.
