I successfully defended my PhD thesis, entitled Debating Europe. Reflections on EU affairs in the public sphere (Universitaire Pers Maastricht, 2011, ISBN 9789461590589), on 1 June 2011. Ever since my research agenda has been predominantly concerned with issues related to media and Euroscepticism.
My research has been published in several journals and also features in The Routledge handbook of Euroscepticism (Routledge, 2018) and the Oxford research encyclopedia of politics (2020). MA European Studies alumna Christiane Barth and I were awarded the 2018 Journal of Contemporary European Studies Best Article Prize for our article 'The Maastricht Treaty and public debates about European integration: The emergence of a European public sphere?' (volume 26, issue 2).
From November 2016 to April 2020 I was co-editor of the E-International Relations blog ‘Brexit: A European Perspective’, together with Russell Foster (Kings College London). I also regularly write for other blogs, in particular the Brexit Blog hosted by the Dublin City University (DCU) Brexit Institute. I also contribute to public events and have been interviewed by national and international media (see Public Engagement).
From 1 February to 31 May 2015 I had the pleasure of being a visiting researcher at the University of Surrey in the UK.
